Safety first! That’s why the minimum requirement is to meet current safety regulations. This task demands a high degree of expertise and responsibility.

In the UK the key pieces of legislation that apply to operators of elevator systems are:

• The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, which place a ‘duty of care’ on the operator to ensure that the equipment is safe.
• The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations, which stipulate the requirement to maintain equipment and have it regularly inspected.

However it is not enough to simply maintain existing equipment. Many older elevator systems do not meet modern standards and elevator operators must define potential hazards and risks associated with them. Were advances in equipment design can remove hazards, or reduce risk, then operators of such equipment have a duty to upgrade their systems to improve the safety of passengers.
